A drop-in clinic is offered at the Lennox Island Health Centre during regular hours of operation. Community members are invited to take advantage of the many services at the clinic, including, but not limited to:
- Blood pressure monitoring
- Glucose testing (blood sugars)
- Weight management
- Wound care
- First Aid
- Glucose monitoring device assistance (Dexcom & Libre)
- Mental health support

Childhood immunizations are offered based on the PEI immunization schedule and parental reminders are provided in advance.
HPV Vaccine/Gardasil clinics are offered to adults (by appointment) and Grade 6 students.
Youth and adult immunizations are offered as required/ordered. Book an appointment with one of the nurses to discuss your immunizations. Click here to view the recommended adult immunizations (ages 18 – 65, and 65+).
Note that immunocompromised individuals may require other vaccines recommended by the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO).

Several health information sessions are offered at the centre throughout the year. Educational information is also offered in the community newsletter and on social media. The goal is to support the health of community members and encourage prevention of disease/injury through targeted education. All sessions are open to on-reserve members of Lennox Island.
Information sessions include, but are not limited to:
- annual community ‘medication cupboard clean out’ of outdated medications (disposal at health centre)
- diabetes education
- heart health
- dental health
- immunizations
- flu prevention
- mental health
- TB prevention
- STIs (sexually transmitted infections), HIV/AIDS, and other blood-borne infections (BBIs)
- women’s health education including breast, ovarian, and cervical health
- men’s health education including prostate, testicular, and cancer prevention
- sexual health for all genders including birth control education, safer sex resources, sexual health education, referrals to SHOR, and testing for STIs and BBIs
Health education is also shared on the Lennox Island Health Centre Facebook page and in the monthly Kwimu newsletter, which is circulated within the community.

Harm Reduction

Harm reduction is an evidence-based, client-centred approach that seeks to reduce the health and social harms associated with addiction and substance use, without necessarily requiring people who use substances to abstain or stop. Confidentiality is always maintained.
Community members can access harm reduction supports at the LIHC, including but not limited to:
- Sharps containers distribution/disposal
- Condoms
- Take-home Naloxone kits and education
- Safe needle exchange program
- Safe use supplies
- Referrals

Communicable diseases are illnesses caused by viruses or bacteria that people spread to one another through contact with contaminated surfaces, bodily fluids, blood products, insect bites, or through the air.
Reportable diseases are followed by the PEI Chief Health Office in collaboration with community health nurses.
The CDCP offers:
- Education
- Contact tracing and follow-up
- Assistance with appointments for treatment
- Immunization programs (see Immunizations Clinics)
- Harm reduction supports (see Harm Reduction Supports)
- Community health emergency preparedness and management
- Tuberculosis (TB) education, investigation, and World TB Day activities

Preventative healthcare screenings and tests can help prevent/reduce the risk of poor health, illness, injury, and early death.
The LIHC offers preventative health screening appointments and annual drive-through clinics. Community members can make an appointment for an HPV (Pap) test, request a colorectal cancer screening, and/or have their last breast screening reviewed by a LIHC medical staff member.

Foot Care Program

While foot health is important to everyone, this program focuses on assisting Elders and people living with diabetes to prevent nail and foot-related problems.
The health centre offers an enhanced foot care program for on-reserve and off-reserve community members, which includes the following services:
- Lower leg and foot assessments
- Nail and skin care
- Diabetes foot exam
- Ingrown toenail management
- Foot Care Education
- Referrals for wound care

Diabetes Program

The Diabetes Program offers support to community members living with diabetes, including education, specialized healthcare services, and referrals to specialists.
Key programs and services offered through the Diabetes Program include:
- Diabetes and pre-diabetes education for groups or one-on-one with our nurses and dietitian.
- Diabetes prevention and management
- Insulin and diabetes medication reviews
- Support and education for Blood Sugar Monitoring and Continuous Glucose Monitoring sensors
- Foot Care Program, which provides foot assessments (including ultrasounds), primary health care services, wound care, and referrals.
- Referrals to healthcare specialists, including doctors, nurse practitioners, wound care nurses, diabetes nurses, and dietitians
- Diabetes Journey, a retreat-style education session for community members living with diabetes
- Partner with the Provincial Diabetes Education nurses and dietitians

Diabetes Journey

The Diabetes Journey is a 2 to 3-day retreat-style education session for community members living with diabetes. Participants come together at an off-reserve location and stay overnight, which allows them to limit distractions and focus on their health goals.
The dietitian and nurses guide conversation and diabetes education in a relaxed setting, along with Elders and special guest speakers. The sessions employ a holistic approach that includes cultural and traditional teachings.
A modified Diabetes Journey is also offered within the community for those unable to stay overnight.

Dietitian Services

Dietitian services are available to on-reserve community members of all ages for nutrition guidance related to specific health conditions/concerns, as well as general health and illness prevention. These services include but are not limited to:
- One-to-one nutrition counselling and/or group education sessions.
- Specialized nutrition support for community members living with chronic disease and/or specific health conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, digestive issues, surgery/wound care, pregnancy, disordered eating, and other specific health concerns or conditions.
- Nutrition support to encourage healthy growth in children and healthy ageing.
Sexual Health

The health centre offers education, supplies, and testing to support sexual health and the prevention of STBBIs (sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections) to all genders. This includes sexual health and birth control education, safer sex resources, and condoms.
Community members can also get tested for STIs (sexually transmitted infections) and BBIs (blood-borne infections). Confidentiality is maintained at all times. Where needed, the health centre also provides referrals to SHORS.

The Home and Community Care Program

This program assists community members of all ages living with chronic and acute illnesses to maintain optimum health, well-being, and independence in their homes and communities. Trained resident care workers and registered nurses provide the services. The goal is to help clients stay in their homes for as long as possible. Importantly, the program is designed to assist and support families; it will not take over the family’s role.
The Home and Community Care Program includes a variety of services tailored to the needs of each client, such as:
- Senior assessments and home care assessments
- Assisting clients with referrals and linkages with provincial service providers and agencies, as well as Lennox Island service providers
- In-home monitoring (e.g., blood pressure), blood sugar testing, injections, medication reviews, foot care, respite, and personal care
- Home safety checks and fall risk assessments
- Monitoring medications and medication reviews
- Support and health education for clients and their families
- Monitoring of palliative care services
- In-home support, senior visits, weekly visits to long-term care clients
- Meal Program-home delivery to Home Care clients, as well as elders (65+) twice a week
- Arranging follow-up for doctor appointments
- Providing health education on recent diagnoses during home visits
- Assisting clients with implementing Life Line (a medical alert system) in their home if necessary
- Grocery shopping for elders if/when needed
- Shopping for long-term care patients and community members who need assistance
- Arranging for medical equipment through the Red Cross and making linkages with NIHB (Non-Insured Health Benefits)
